Assistant Superintendent of Jail (ASJ) of BPS-16 is much sought after job in Punjab owing to perks and privileges attached to the job. Jobs for ASJ are announced by Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC). Recently, PPSC ( has announced 100 jobs of ASJ for Male candidates and 06 jobs for female candidates through consolidated advertisement No. 35 which can be accessed online at

Closing date for the submission of online application is 22 October 2016 till 1200 hrs (12 O’clock at noon). There is no need to submit Hard Copy of online form. The candidate should possess a valid CNIC and Original Chalan Form of Rs. 400/- paid at National Bank / State Bank to appear in the test. Chalan form can be downloaded from the following link or from the official website of PPSC.

Any person having the domicile of any district of the Punjab is eligible.


  1. Academic Qualification:
    1. A/B.SC or Equivalent (14 year of education in any discipline / subject ) from a university / institute recognized by HEC.
  2. Physical Standard
    1. For Male Candidates:
      1. Height 173 cm (5 Feet 8.5 inches)
      2. Chest 85 cm without expansion; 90 cm with expansion
  •            Vision
    1. 6/6 without glasses (for Right eye)
    2. 6/6 without glasses for left eye
  • For Female Candidates:
    1. Height 158 cm (5 feet 2 inches)& Maximum 70 kg weight (2 kg weight extra allowed for each 3 cm of height extra in addition to 158 cm minimum height)


  1. 6/6 without glasses for right eye
  2. 6/6 without glasses for left eye
  • Age:
    1. 20 to 27 years up to closing date (as on 22-10-2016) for both male and female candidates.


Selection Procedure:

Selection procedure comprises of i) a test and ii) an interview.

  1. Test

100 Marks multiple choice test of 90 minute duration and 100 questions is conducted by PPSC to shortlist candidates for interview. Negative marking penalty of 0.25 marks is awarded on attempting a question wrong.

  1. Test Syllabus: there are two parts of syllabus:
    1. Questions relating to Qualification of the Post
    2. General Knowledge including Pakistan Affairs, Islamiat, Urdu, Computer Science, Geography, English, Basic Mathematics, Everyday Science and Current Affairs.

Try preparing general knowledge from some quality G.K books available in the market. Following two books are good for the purpose:

  1. Caravan General Knowledge (Objective Type) published by Caravan Publishers Urdu Bazaar Lahore
  2. PPSC Old Papers by Advance Publishers.
  3. Old Papers CSS for the subjects of Current Affairs, Islamiat, Pakistan Affair, Geography and Everyday Science.

Merit for Short listing of Candidates for Interview:

Last year the candidates who got 65+ marks out of 100 in the test were called for interview. But this merit can change this year as it is a competitive exam. PPSC had called 360 candidates against 66 seats last year which meant that almost 5 candidates against a seat are called for interview normally


Shortlisted Candidates who perform well in test are called for an interview. Interview is a rigorous exercise which will be conducted by a 3-5 member panel consisting of a PPSC Member, a prison department’s member and a psychologist. So never take it easy and prepare well for the interview. Major Areas to be covered for interview include:

  3. Current Affairs
  4. Hot Issues like energy crisis, water issue, war, metro train etc

Joining & Training:

Finally selected candidates are appointed as ASJ and get training from Prison’s Academy

This job has quite good perks and privileges besides the pay package. A good residence, personal servants, uniform, power over inmates and liaison with Judiciary and police are notable benefits of this job.

Promotion is neither very fast nor very slow. ASJ can hope to become Deputy Superintendent Jail in almost 8-10 years. After DSJ, he/she can become Superintendent Jails who is the Number One of a prison.

It is a lucrative job for the aspirants who hail from rural background and want to have some say in the society. Persons seeking a job with uniform would also like it. But candidates with shy, introvert nature and of intellectual habits may not like it very well. In short, it is a good job and all aspirants should go for it, at least for the purpose of having some experience of official tests and interviews.
